Golden Baked Turnip Fries

A basic old turnip can surprise you. Cheap at leass than $0.99/ pound, the lowly turnip has been making a comeback in new dishes on the TV cooking shows.

Description

Jamie Oliver suggested peeling, cubing and boiling in a pot with carrots to make a ‘sweet’ mash. (The Brits call these vegetables a “swede”). Then drain, mash with butter and salt and it’s a delicious side for any roast dinner.

So I bought a big turnip and used half for Jamie’s recipe and the other half sat lonely in the fridge.

In a pinch to clean out my fridge crisper recently I improvised and created ‘turnip fries”. Who knew this would be such a good idea?? Baked and served with a dollop of ketchup for dipping I tricked my 3 kids. Well…. they were tricked based on the look of the fries. Once they tasted them, two kids couldn’t be fooled for a potato and took a pass but the third loved her fries.
