Ever since we were little, my brother and I have loved Father’s Day. Not only because it is a day to celebrate all that makes our Dad great, but also because our father becomes “Super Dad” on this day. Other Dads like to take a day off on Father’s Day to spend the day on the golf course with their buddies – not Super Dad!
We would start to get excited in the weeks leading up to the big day because we knew that dad had planned something fun. However, we did know how the day would start because it was always the same – pancakes – or rather crêpes. Dad preferred the thin, delicious crêpes that his German Oma used to make over the thick, heavy pancakes that our mom made. So, on Dad’s special day we woke up to the noise of him banging pots and singing Motown tunes. At the breakfast table piled high with crêpes, apricot jam and icing sugar, Dad would reveal the Father’s Day plan… that afternoon we would head out on an adventure together. Some of our adventures were close to home: a Blue Jays game (we are big baseball fans!), a mystery bike trek to a beautiful picnic location hidden in the city, tickets to a musical theatre matinee. Some afternoon adventures took us further afield: a jet boat ride in Niagara, a hot air balloon trip near Stratford, zip-lining in Collingwood.

Clue#1:“No division here”
answer: Union Stn clock
Perhaps the best adventure was one that cost very little, a citywide scavenger hunt. This was in the days long before geo-caching and The Amazing Race and our dad is a master storyteller and artist. To start, our dad gave us the first cryptic clue at our house and told us that he’d see us later if we could find him! We had to decode this clue, and with transit passes in hand find our way to the location of the next clue. We spent a crazy afternoon racing around the city solving riddles and puzzles and drawings to find our way to various locations where our dad had hidden treats including
Ice Cream vouchers to use at the next secret location, and buckets of water balloons to soak each other, and a key to unlock a stairwell door to a spectacular rooftop view. We laughed and ran and shouted our way all over town until the final destination…a movie theatre where our dad was waiting for us with tickets and popcorn for all. It was the best day among years of best days.
These years, we help with the Father’s Day adventure planning. Dad looks forward to Father’s Day just as much as he always did and he loves to surprise the grandkids. Last year Dad took all of them to a special lookout to peer through the telescope that we got for him from Best Buy. This year Grandpa and the kids will be camping overnight in new tents in our backyard. They will have a blast and we are all looking forward to a morning filled with crêpes and Motown hits!
