My Favourite Mother's Day Books

These books drive home the reason why I’m a mother and I love all of them. The first couple might be a bit too sweet for everyday but guaranteed to bring a tear or two. The other are nice stories I like to read with my kids and are perfect for storytime anytime, not just around Mother’s Day.

Someday by Alison McGhee

The first time I read this book outloud to my daughter I didn’t realise how emotional it would be and I was caught off guard. Now after many readings, I can read it without crying. It’s so touching and reminds us all that childhood is fleeting and soon our sweet babies will be grown up (as will we!), faster than we can imagine.  A perfect Mother’s Day gift for any mother.

Love You Forever by Robert Munsch

Every child has this in their bookcase don’t they? Haven’t mothers everywhere sobbed over this tender story? I know a mom who gives each of her children this book on their first birthday and pens a personal message to that child inside the cover. It’s a sweet tale of everlasting love and about the ties that bind a mother and son. You’re never too old for this one.

Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman

This book makes me chuckle as we follow the scrawny little bird around in search of his mother. I must have read it as a child because I always feel so nostalgic when we read it. It’s a terrific preschooler book and my kindergartner is starting to be able to read it too. My son loves the digger “Snort” in this story the best!

Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too? By Eric Carle

Let it be known I am a huge, huge Eric Carle fan. I adore his unique illustrations and find the simplicity of his stories make  their messages resonate. The repetitive nature of this book (“Yes! A Fox has a mother. Just like me and you!”) reminds me of his Brown Bear, Brown Bear book. Young children will learn about families and mothers but also be reminded of their animals in this book.
