We Go Wild at African Lion Safari + Contest Ahead!

July 8, 2016momstownFeatured6 comments

Psst! Contest ahead
If reading this is getting you excited for summer adventure, stay tuned for a fun Comment-to-Win contest coming up in next week’s newsletter. You’ll have a chance to WIN one of ten 4-packs of tickets to African Lion Safari so you can go wild with the family! We’ll see you there and good luck.

It is time for a safari! Every summer our family looks forward to close encounters with elephants, cheetahs, rhinos, giraffes, zebras and lemurs. So, are we heading to the airport for a costly trip to South Africa? Nope…we are heading to the Cambridge/Hamilton area for our annual day trip to African Lion Safari.

We begin by getting all the info we need from lionsafari.com. The kids love to check out the photos and stats about their favourite animals – the park is home to over 1000 exotic birds and over 100 different animal species that roam free in the many different large reserves. Our eldest likes to soak up all the facts about the park’s history of conservation initiatives regarding endangered and threatened species. With all the info we need, we excitedly pack up the car and take the short drive west of Toronto.ALS_Giraffe

When we arrive at the park we immediately head for the 9km drive-through Game Reserve. We laugh at the antics of the lemurs as we drive by and through their fun and games. The kids love to take a million photos of the beautiful lions lazing in the sun and shade near their rock dens – we spend a long time in this reserve. Our eldest keeps us informed with all those important facts. The vast open areas ahead in the reserves with giraffes and zebras and emus, and then bison and deer and elk mean that there is a lot of yelling, “Look over there! and over here! and over there!” The kids (and grown-ups) love it.

After spending as much time as we want driving through the “wilderness” we park the car and enjoy the rest of our safari on foot. Our annual “must-dos” include the Birds of Prey Demonstration – a fave of our youngest, and the Elephant Swim – a fave of mine. There are lots of interactive exhibits and play areas that we encounter while we wander the park, and a Railway Tour and a Boat Cruise to enjoy while we rest our feet.

We made sure to pack our swimsuits for the end-of-day treat at the park’s Wet Play area. It is a combo of splash pad sprinklers and spouts for the younger kids and geysers and dumping water buckets for the older ones.

After everyone has dried off, the kids know that they can have one more run around the super fun Jungle Playground before we head to the car. It’s guaranteed that they will be asleep before we drive out the exit. – so much fun, so many memories, so many photos.
