What you need to know about baby’s first solid foods

August 21, 2014momstownParentingNo comments
It’s such an exciting time when baby is ready for his or her first solid foods! But it can be overwhelming too – what foods should I start with, should make my own or buy premade, is my baby really ready? We’ve got great tips and tricks from experienced moms to help make the transition fun and easy – as well as some new products that will help you on your way.

1. Making the move to solids

  • Sometimes new things can be stressful – we've got 4 strategies to take the stress out of introducing solid foods – so both mom and baby can head into this new adventure relaxed and excited!
  • There are new recommendations on what's 'just right' for baby's first food – read more here to learn about the recommendations, so you can make an informed choice for you and your baby.
  • The Canadian Pediatric Association has great advice on weaning and first solid foods – take a look at their recommendations for 6-12 months.

2. Making your own baby food

It doesn't have to be overwhelming and it doesn't have to be hard! Start simple with one food at a time, and

  • Products like the new Munchkin Fresh Food blender make pureeing a snap.  At the touch of a button you can have finely mashed food for your little one. Available at Walmart (don't forget, you can order it to your house 24/7 – shipped for free!)
  • Storing baby food is easy with the Munchkin Click Lock Fresh Food freezer trays. You can make in batches and store for later!

3. Finding the right snacks

There are so many great baby snack options out there – and even if you make your own baby food, you may decide to have some packaged snacks on hand for home and on the go.

  • Gerber baby snacks come in all different shapes, sizes, and ages
  • We love Parent's Choice Little Puffs for an easy on-the-go snack and love that the container fits into a cupholder

4. Changes to routine

When you're home in the kitchen, freezer stocked and highchair at hand, you'll get into an easy routine. But consider what you might need to plan for if you're travelling, out and about, or even just at Nana's house. Here are some great read to help you out:

  • What to feed your baby while on holidays
  • Great portable highchairs for travel
