Singing with a rainstick

April 11, 2011momstownRecessNo comments
Rainsticks are said to bring about rain! And we need lots of rain in the spring time to get those flowers growing.

Here's a fun rainstick craft from momstown to have fun with on a rainy day.

Lauren did a great rain dance after making her own rainstick! Here's what you need:

Materials:

  • Paper towel rolls
  • Tape
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Popcorn kernels
  • optional – feathers for decoration!

Directions:

Cover the ends with construction paper and tape. Use tape to cover the entire 'hole' area because after a lot of shaking, the construction paper will rip, so you need reinforcement.

Before taping the second end, put a handful of popcorn kernels into the tube. Decorate the stick any way you like!

This craft was inspired by the musical instruments we found at the Royal Botanical Gardens during their Wild Music Exhibit – we played with a rain stick made out of sugar cane so figured a paper towel roll would work too!
