Like most of the female population, we at momstown love a good women empowering women story. Something we’ve realized that we love more than one story… weekly stories! Our favourite #CoolMom, Jada Pinkett Smith has started her very own Facebook show, Red Table Talk. The show is about Jada Pinkett Smith, her daughter Willow, and mother Adrienne – three generations of women open their home for a series of candid conversations with family and friends.
Now if you know anything about Jada then you know that she is and has always been very candid, open and honest about herself and her life. She isn’t afraid to stand up for women and their wants and needs. If you want anyone on your team, Jada’s your girl! Some of the topics she discusses at the table with her mother and daughter would make the average woman cringe but not Jada. Sure, there may be some topics she’d rather avoid but she pushes through and gets to the tough talk – THAT PART! Along with being candid and honest, Ms. Pinkett Smith is also very extra, extra is her dialogue, extra in her voice of opinion, extra is all aspects of her life (watch the videos closely for fabulous outfits and shoes!), her “extra” ways really leave you feeling empowered and wanting to take on the world, she will instills a sense of Bad Ass in you. She is fearlessly fabulous.
Before you dive in to an episode it is important to take a moment and recognize the fact that you may not share the same opinion on every or any part of the conversations at the Red Table. What you do take away from watching an episode is how candid and positive the conversations are. These women tackle the topics we all want to talk about – parenting, body issues, being a woman, relationships and friendships. Willow, Jada and Adrienne share stories and topics that will leave you feeling inspired, wanting to call your mom/daughter/friend and sometimes have you reaching for a tissue or two!
We have put together a list of our top 3 favourite episodes thus far, take a peek!
We love this episode because Jada, Adrienne and Willow are women of different ages and eras. They grew up with different perceptions about women and body image. Jada is honest about how she lets her kids be themselves and Adrienne isn’t shy when opening up about how the youth of today is much different and she at times, finds herself confused by them! The amazing thing is that even though there are differing opinions, they respect each others opinions and are open to educating one another on how things were then and how things are now. We also love hearing how candid each and every one of them are about how they feel in their own skin. Jada addresses those turban rumours and we totally get it! Ms. Adrienne, at the age of 64, will have you clutching at your pearls when you see her in a bikini but, just like us, we see one thing and others see another. We love how honest she is about body insecurity at her age. Oh, and Willow, she’s gets real about armpit hair, her slim figure and owning it!
In this episode Jada and Gabrielle Union hash it out! They took some time to sit down at the Red Table and hash out a long lived ‘feud’. How many of us have that one person we wish we could sit with and just hash it out with? Well these ladies do it! In the episode they even address the fact that they don’t even remember what the feud was about. Gabrielle owns up to the fact that in the early years of her career she was very angry and bitter towards people and their success, and it took her a long time to come to terms with being happy with who she is and what she has. We love this episode because it just shows us, at any age, it’s never to late to squash something and put the past in the past. Although we’d love a little more juice as to what started the whole celebrity quarrel, we totally get that it’s childish and unnecessary.
Okay, probably our favourite episode thus far! Maybe we love it for the fact that Adrienne is beyond uncomfortable at the idea of talking about sex and it makes us giggle, or Willow’s dramatic facial expressions, or even a short clip separately where Jada admits that vaginal rejuvenation has turned her vagina into a 16 year-old again! Whatever it is, we love it. There is something about getting candid during a sex talk that brings out the teenager in us all. They talk sex toys, masturbation and Jada even opens up about how she was equally, if not more protective with Jaden than Willow growing up because she knew that sexual predators do not just target girls. I think we love this episode so much because it really just talks about all the stuff we are too afraid to bring up with our kids, all the things that we think are taboo and off the table. Let me tell you… this topic is all over the Red Table!
Red Table Talk has inspired us in more ways than one. If you haven’t tuned in yet, we definitely recommend you do.
