No Fail Simple Slime

January 24, 2018meritemudoRecessNo comments

When the slime craze started over a year ago in our home, I initially thought it would be a phase that would pass in a couple of weeks so I let my children make slime out of any liquid substance imaginable! Seems time passed and this ‘trend’ stuck around and is still an ongoing part of our daily lives. So, tons of Tupperware later hosting various textures, scents and ingredients I thought it was time to get some basics down pact so that the kids wouldn’t be throwing and wasting ingredients day after day. Here are our go-to recipes for successful slime basics!

**Note** Glitter, food color, soap, paint and stayflo etc can all be added to these to make for more ‘fun’ and tons of combinations- they are endless!

Anyone else's kitchen table look like this after school? The slime fad hasn't ended (will it ever?) – – – #slime #slimerecipe #afterschool #afterschoolfun #slimemaking #fad #messykids #atleasttheyarentfighting #childhoodunplugged

Slime Safety First!

Both the Borax recipe and the non-borax version are still dangerous if not made and used properly. Make sure you keep the following in mind:

  • Always have an adult present when making slime
  • Do not ingest any of the products used, as they can be hazardous to your health
  • Children under 3 should always be supervised when using slime for play
  • Thoroughly wash hands after using/playing with slime and ingredients

Basic Slime Recipe (No Fail)

Ingredients

  • 4oz Elmer’s Glue
  • 1TSP Borax
  • 1/2 CUP Lukewarm Water

Instructions

  1. Squeeze about 4 ounces of glue into a glass bowl.
  2. Mix in 1 1/2 bottles of warm water. …
  3. Add your food coloring, if desired. …
  4. Mix 1 teaspoon of Borax into 1/2 cup of water, and slowly add the solution to the glue mixture.
  5. Stir in the Borax solution until the slime started to come together. …
  6. Knead the Flubber.
  1. In a medium sized bowl, pour in 4oz Elmer’s white or clear glue.
  2. In a separate container add 1TSP Borax and 1/2 CUP lukewarm water until dissolved
  3. Slowly pour Borax mixture to the bowl of glue mixing constantly.
  4. Once slime takes a uniform appearance knead with hands for a while to mix and enjoy!

Tidbit about Boric Acid:

Yes, Boric acid IS made from borax and it seems that most activators have some type of borax ingredients in them – including the contact lens solutions that people claim are ‘safe’ for children to use instead of Borax. Overall, please make sure to keep a close eye on your children when making and playing with any type of slime or related products and thoroughly wash hands to avoid consumption and harm.

Contact Solution Slime Alternative

Ingredients

  • Elmer’s Glue
  • 1/2 TBSP Baking Soda
  • 1½ TBSP Renu Fresh Contact Lens Solution (must contain boric acid)
  • Lukewarm Water

Instructions

  1. In a medium sized bowl, pour in 4oz Elmer’s white or clear glue.
  2. Add 1/2 TBSP of baking soda and 1 TBSP of water to make paste – add to the glue mixture and increse water until mixed thoroughly. This is where you will get the consistency you want.
  3. Slowly add in your contact lens solution a TSP at a time – make sure to keep an eye on it, you don’t want to add too much! Keep Mixing!
  4. Once slime takes a uniform appearance knead with hands for a while to mix. If it is still too sticky add a little (very little) more contact solution until stretchy!
