Are your kids excited about the upcoming winter games? Are you? What sports will they want to watch? Do you know the names of them all and what they are? What a great opportunity to talk about sports, goals, competition and perseverance, as we cheer on our favourite athletes!
Materials:
pipe cleaners in blue, yellow, black, green, red (bring out all the colours so that you can play "find the colours")
white background- bristle board, placemat or paper
Directions:
1. Colour recognition– Place a bunch of pipe cleaners on the table. Help your child find the ones with the right colours; blue, yellow, black, green and red.
2. Fine motor skills and Shape Recognition- Take each of the 5 pipe cleaners and make a circle. Practice your shapes together and talk about what other fun shapes you could make- try it out!!
4. Patterning– Put your coloured rings in the right order and show your child how to loop them together, just like on the flag (more fine motor skill practice). To take patterning to the next level, see if you child can tell you what colour would come next, if you were going to repeat the pattern. Older kids might want to know that this is an ABCDE pattern!
You can even hang this as an Olympic Mobile to decorate while you watch the events and cheer on the athletes!
We have over 25 teachable moments and more Olympic crafts that you can do with your children this Winter Olympic season!
