Make Music with Simple Shakers with Baby Food Jars

March 22, 2011momstownRecessNo comments
Make these fun and simple shakers with your left over baby food jars, mason jars, or any small containers you have to reuse! Great for all ages to make and shake!

Materials:
–    Small containers with lids
–    White paper
–    Stickers
–    Rice or small noodles

Who can help:
–    Babies 12 months+ (decorating)
–    Toddlers (filling jars)
–    Preschoolers (experimenting with sounds)

Directions:

Cut strips of white paper the right size to wrap around your jar. Attach to jar using glue or tape. Decorate paper with stickers. We used some great momstown colours with our circle stickers!

Fill each jar halfway with rice or noodles, attach the lid, and shake away! (You might want to glue the lids on as a safety precaution.)

For older explorers, have them try filling their jars with different amounts of rice or noodles – how does this change the sound? You could also use paper clips, buttons, or any other small objects (with an eye on the younger ones for choking hazards). Have them experiment with how different objects make different types of sounds in the shakers.

momstown Guelph had a great time with these shakers and some other fun instruments – click here to see the action!

Need some dancing music? Try Raffi’s Shake My Sillies Out as a great shakin’ song!
