momstown tried a great exploratory activity from my points of view that was a lot of fun for my 4 year old, but could be used with much younger children as the 'ingredients' are simple and it's quick and easy.
How did we create such magical colours? We used:
First, pour a thin layer of milk onto the baking tray. My son used a plastic spoon to 'spread' it around (this had lots of play value just on it's own!)
Then we added small drops of food colouring to the milk.
Look at that stirring action! Swirling the food colouring around in the milk makes some great patterns and colours. The more colours you add, the more colourful the mixture becomes.
We went a bit nuts and added everything we could find in the 'liquid' department – foam soap, dish soap (we only had dye-free so it didn't do much), hand sanitizer (added a nice smell!) and even vinegar. Great way to engage kids in exploring and experimenting, in a safe and fairly mess-free way!
