Introducing your child to gardening

April 20, 2011momstownRecessNo comments
Our momstown Guelph chapter holds a very cool monthly science group and their focus recently was very springlike – they learned about seeds!

The kids had a lot of fun prepping their containers and dirt and planting some little tiny seeds that are going to grow into large sunflowers!

We also read a story about how different plants come from tiny little seeds!

It was a lot of fun to teaching our little ones the science of growing plants and everyone will be able to continue that lesson at home as they watch their plants grow!

Materials:

potting soil

cup/pot

seeds.

Directions:

The best seeds are green beans (they sprout and grow very quickly!) or sunflower (which promise growth in 7 days). Plant, water regularly and find a sunny windowsill for your child's seed and watch in amazement with your child as they keep an eye on the daily transformation of the seed. Older children might like to keep a journal to document the process and draw pictures every few days of the growing plant.

Growing plants and gardening is an incredible process to get kids involved in. Here are a few other momstown blogs about the topic:
