We all know the power of young girls and women and see it constantly taking place around the world. We see it in leaders like Malala Yousafzai, J.K. Rowling, Shonda Rhimes and in every day people changing the world with their passion and ideas. As a mom of a young daughter, I want to ensure that we continue to live in a world where that continues to be possible; for girls and young women to have the confidence in the things they do, to know that gender isn’t a set back and that they have the power to follow their dreams. That’s why I am thrilled about Girl Expo – the first ever Canadian consumer show for girls, celebrating their limitless opportunities – is taking place in Toronto this month!
Girl Expo Canada is a one-day empowerment extravaganza focusing exclusively on girls ages 5-12. To celebrate all girls are, can do and can become. The event will empower girls to discover their potential through demonstrations, activities, speakers and entertainment. There will be IT & science activities, author readings, Dove empowerment workshops, the Mini Pops fashion shows, outdoor yoga, a female DJ playing girl power songs, sports demonstrations and a host of vendors with products and activities geared towards girls.
Girl Expo Canada was started by two Toronto moms whose daughters kept them looking for new opportunities – they wanted to play sports with other girls, they searched for clothing that reflected their diverse interests, and they sought out books with strong, inspiring heroines. Each request became a challenge for these moms, who realized that their girls, and all girls, needed more opportunities
to uncover their talents and develop their passions. And what better way, than an expo for girls, where opportunities and fresh ideas could all be presented under one roof?
