First Month as a Stay At Home Dad

October 4, 2012momstownReal LifeNo comments
Wow has the rest of summer ever gone fast and here we are just past September. As you might recall my husband has taken the plunge into being a full time dad! He is now the one who takes care of the kids, cooks most of the meals and does a large percentage of the cleaning in our house.

I, on the other hand, am trying to get back into the swing of focusing the majority of my hours on running a successful business and growing our momstown Guelph Chapter.  It is quite an interesting role reversal in our household.

So what has the last month been like for us?

My Husband has taken on the role of full time dad without complaint.  Well except on how to find time to fit in a second cup of HOT coffee in the morning!

He spends his days with his kids and does all the chores I would normally do.  This includes school drop off and pick up.  However he is learning lessons along the way.  Like how it loves to pour right at the time you have to stand outside with the kids.  Also how some days when you bring little brother for school pick up sister is thrilled to see him and how other days she is not.  Of course the days she is not happy to see him will be the day you decided to walk and therefore they will fight the entire walk home.

Also he is learning when you take the toddler grocery shopping do not take your eyes off him and make sure the pork chops are out of his reach!  Thank you to the kind mom who saw his distress and offered him a baby wipe when my DS decided to put his hands in the raw meat.

There is also the adjustment from being out of the house 5 days a week and working for someone else to suddenly being home all the time.  This is something most of us woman expect and prepare for right from the start of our pregnancies.  Although I am sure some woman have a hard time with leaving work as well.  My husband never anticipated taking this leap and on top of that he was not met with encouragement from his employer when he broke the news.  I cannot remember feeling this loss of who I was, but there is definitely a re-evaluation of one’s identity that has to happen.

However regardless of the trials that have faced us I have to say that I am so proud of my husband for doing this.  For being one of the many dads trailblazing and showing the world that men can do this too.  That they as fathers deserve to be at home with their family as much as anyone.  You will find my husband out and about at momstown events and at the school drop off and in Walmart doing the shopping with toddler in tow.
