Dinosaur Digging Birthday Party Ideas

July 30, 2013momstownRecessNo comments
When my son turned 5, he could tell you every dinosaur’s name, what they liked to eat and what era they were from. So, when I started planning his birthday party at home, I only had one theme in mind…Dinosaurs!

We wanted to get the kids involved in many of the activities we had done at the museum as well as have some fun with crafts, so I hit my local dollar and party stores to get all the supplies we needed for a Paleo Party of epic proportions!  What an awesome Dinosaur Digging Birthday party!

Activities:

Digging- we turned our basement into a palentologist's dream!  Using large Rubbermaid clear bins, we filled each with sand and small dinosaur figures (dollar stores sell them).  The kids wore clear utility glasses and plastic gloves and used large paint brushes to wisk away the sand and reveal the dinosaurs.  The kids had a blast!  We had about 4 stations with tarps under the bins and caution tape around the "scene".  The supplies were all at the dollar store (except bins and sand).  What a memorable dig!

Crafts- the dollar store had several wooden craft kits to put together models and other kits to paint the plaster moulds. Erupting volcanos and other paper dinosaur crafts would crowd pleasers too!

Movie and Books- we asked the budding palentologists to wear pjs to the party to end the event with a screening of the BBC's Walk of the Dinosaurs DVD.  You can also have fun with some great Dinosaur books like "How do Dinosaurs Eat Cookies".

Lootbags- we gave each child a few dinosaur fact cards (split from this pack from Mastermind) as well as a dino digging egg and some dinosaur stickers. They also got to keep the toys they found at the dig and the crafts.

Cupcakes- using a dinosaur candy mould found at the bulk store or online, I made candy dinosaur toppers in green and brown for cupcakes.  I ordered 24 cupcakes from a local store (cheaper when plain!) and added the edible toppers!  The kids LOVED the decoration, but I might choose a white icing next time….we had so many RED faces!
