momstown Winnipeg made this Rainbow Fruit Salad during their Junior Chef Program and had a blast! Dividing up into teams by task and by fruit, little hands were kept busy washing and cutting (supervised with dull but safe knives). The kids made a large rainbow salad together and then chose their own favourite fruits to create a mini rainbow on their own snacktime plates.
Fruit suggestions to consider for this salad (washed):
RED: watermelon, raspberries, strawberries, pomegranates, red apples, dried cranberries
ORANGE: oranges, papaya, cantelope, peaches
YELLOW: bananas, mango, pineapple, pears
GREEN: kiwi, green grapes, green apples, honeydew melon
PURPLE: red grapes, blackberries, figs, raisins
1. Choose the shape for your fruit salad (e.g. rainbow, a specific shape-circle, triangle, etc).
2. Place fruit in the shape you have chosen.
Combining food and fun with a teachable moment is always a winner! Creating this salad provides a perfect opportunity to talk about healthy eating and good choices.
