Construction is a fun theme for both boys and girls! Some children will want to know the name of every construction machine, while others will just enjoy seeing dirt dumped and holes dug. It’s a great activity for kids to emulate with toy dump trucks, cranes, and the like. When your child is ‘digging’ construction, what better plan than to pull out some construction-related books to enjoy together?
For Babies & Toddlers
Construction Countdown. A countdown from 10 to 1, all with construction vehicles! Introduces simple counting concepts – kids can help by counting the vehicles on each page and begin to recognize the numerals.
Hard at Work. This board book introduces children to the different ‘big shiny machine’ construction vehicles, with brightly coloured pictures and simple text.
Brum! Simple board book fun pictures of animals aboard trucks, tractors, cranes, and other construction vehicles. Children can participate by saying ‘Brum!’ every time you turn the page.
Trucks Go. Fun and creative ‘sounds’ for all kinds of trucks, for example, the garbage truck goes “burbaba burbaba burbaba screech beep-beep-beep crunch crunch crunch”, etc. Children will enjoy repeating the sounds back!
Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel. A classic tale about Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel, Mary Ann. They run into trouble when more powerful shovels are invented – but in the end they save the day! Gets children to think about modernization in a fun and entertaining way.
B is for Bulldozer. All ages can enjoy this book – although the text is simple, older children can point out the letters A to Z and associate the words with the sounds they make, i.e. A for Asphalt.
