Coffee Filter Shamrocks

March 5, 2011momstownRecessNo comments
Great science experiment to demonstrate colour mixing, as well as a great shamrock craft for St. Patrick’s Day!

Materials:

•    White Paper Coffee Filters
•    Scissors
•    Blue & Yellow Liquid Food Colouring (with a dropper)

Directions:

Show your child water in a glass and drop a colour into it – they will ohhh and ahh as the water changes colour. Do this for both blue and yellow and then a third glass to mix to make green. My kids totally loved this and had a blast mixing their own green colours.

For the craft, you don’t need the coloured water (it’s just for fun!).

Cut the Coffee Filters into Shamrock shapes.  Simply let a couple of drops fall onto the paper filter. The colour will absorb (don’t add too much – my son did this and watch out staining saturation!) into the paper. Then add the second colour in the same way (drops) and green will appear in a tie-dye kind of way. Very cool and fun!

Dry & Hang! Happy St Patrick’s Day!! May the luck of the Irish be with you! Go find some momstown friends to celebrate with!

** warning – food colouring can stain! Wear smocks or strip off shirts before doing this craft. Hands can get messy too – but isn’t that the fun? My kids sure felt Irish after this – very green!
