Reluctant to use store-bought food colouring? Mother Nature provides a palette of natural ingredients which you can use to create your dyes.

Here’s what you’ll need to create yellow dye:

  • 2 tablespoons turmeric
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar

On the stovetop, bring turmeric and water to a boil in a pot. Boil for 5 minutes.

Pour coloured liquid into a deep cup or bowl.

Stir in 1 tablespoon vinegar.

For orange dye, substitute turmeric with paprika.

For blue dye:

Boil 3 1/2 cups of frozen blueberries and 2 cups of water in a pot for 5 minutes.

Remove blueberries by pouring the mixture through a sieve into a deep cup or bowl.

Reserve the coloured liquid in a deep cup or bowl and stir in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.

For red dye:

Substitute frozen blueberries with frozen raspberries and follow the steps above.

Hint: Broaden your colour spectrum by creating the liquids above and mixing them together. For green dye, mix your blue and yellow liquids together or for purple dye, mix the blue and red liquids.
