When I was a kid, the library in my elementary school had many well-loved, almost worn-out books. The book that was most loved by me, and that I renewed time and time again was, My Mother Is the Most Beautiful Woman in the World. And every Mother’s Day since those Gr 1 & 2 years I think about this book – I remember the feeling of the thick paper, the small tears in the cover, the colourful illustrations and the moving story. A little girl is separated from her mother during a day of harvesting in the fields and when the townspeople ask the girl to describe her mother she says, “My mother is the most beautiful woman in the world!” One after another, the people bring forward the prettiest women from near and far. Each time the little girl exclaims, “No! My mother is the most beautiful woman in the world!” Finally, the girl spots her mother who is plump and homely, and who is “the most beautiful” in the child’s eyes. I loved the illustration on that last page – the townspeople smiling while the beautiful mother and the little girl hug each other tightly. It was such a gentle, comforting end to the story.
As an adult, the message of this wonderful story can be inferred from page one. But perhaps it is as an adult that we can appreciate the message even more. On Mother’s Day as we choose the perfect card and gift for our mother and for those who “mother” us, we can think of the most important line from the story, “We do not love people because they are beautiful, but they seem beautiful to us because we love them.”
For Mother’s Day shopping I visit my local Hallmark store because I know that I will find the small gifts and cards that will carry that feeling to the mothers in my life – a lovely mug for her to enjoy her favourite tea, a delightful umbrella that will brighten up a rainy walk, a pretty journal to record her words of wisdom. Each year, Hallmark carefully curates a selection of gifts and cards that will bring a gentle smile to your mom’s face and will result in a comforting hug. As you hug her, let her know that she is the most beautiful woman in the world.
