School is out! Parents and kids across Canada are getting ready to embark on their summer adventures. Now that the kids are home every day for the next few months, it may seem like a lot to manage but momstown wants to remind you to take a breath, take in all that summer has to offer and simply get WILD with the family! With road trips on the horizon, pools and parks open, we want to every parent to remember…it only lasts a short while, so make it count! Here are a few things you and your family can do to have the wildest summer yet. Let the planning begin!
Wake Up The Wild!
Every summer, our family looks forward to close encounters with elephants, cheetahs, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and lemurs. So, are we heading to the airport for a costly trip to South Africa? Nope…we are heading to the Hamilton ON area for our annual day trip to African Lion Safari. What’s better is that they now have a new behind the scenes exclusive experience that gets you closer to the animals than ever before! We’re talking unrivalled access; going off road in an open air truck, to come within a metre of the endangered rhino, hand feeding Canada’s largest heard of giraffe and even witnessing lions devouring their morning meal! Ask about their Wake Up The Wild Safari Adventure, learn all about it. We highly recommend it! And be sure to book it in advance because its available on select dates from June to September (maximum tour capacity is 12 and children must be age 8+). Too up close and personal? Take the regular tour and you will still experience what a Safari Adventure is really like!
Unplug and Connect with Nature.
Leave the devices at home or at least on silent for Pete’s sake! Be an outdoor-enabler and teach the kids that life is lived to the fullest when their eyes are off-screen. Pack up some snacks and trek over to a local park or playground. Ontario has some excellent local parks that are perfect for an afternoon picnic, Shakespeare in the Park or a beautiful nature hike through wooded trails. Plus, did you know that in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday this year, you can visit any Parks Canada place for free? Can I get an Oh Canada! You don’t have to venture out too far from your neighbourhood to find a great outdoor space – plus you’re bound to see other parents with their kids taking advantage of sunny summer days too.
Try a Backyard Campout
If you haven’t already booked your camp site, chances are you won’t find one available. By now, most campgrounds are fully booked, unless you’re willing to travel to the true, TRUE North of Canada! But you can still experience open-air living. There’s nothing better than getting your family out to the back yard to have a fun and imaginative camping experience. Backyard camping was a favourite memory of mine as a child, and now my kids love it. Set up tents and a fire pit. Get in your sleeping bags so you can tell stories, gaze at the stars or play a fun family game of charades. Don’t forget to get the s’mores!
Make a Splash.
The best part of summer is that the temperatures are PERFECT for a trip to the beach/lakefront for swimming, lounging or just taking in the sunset. With almost double the amount of coastline than the United States, Canada is FULL of beautiful beaches and they deserve a visit. A full day can be spent out in the fresh air with activities like beach-combing, volleyball, kayaking and we can’t forget the ultimate sandcastle competition! Some Ontario beaches close to the city, like Sugar Beach in Toronto, have umbrellas available and even outdoor movies so you don’t have to go too far. Pack up some beach toys, sunscreen, some boogie boards and you’re ready to make a splash! I guarantee your kids will be all for it. I swear mine had fins in another life!
We know that with summer comes relaxation but don’t forget to sneak in some physical activity. Getting your family out for an afternoon bike ride, soccer game or on their rollerblades a few times a week is an absolute must. Many will say a minimum of 60 mins a day of physical activity is recommended for children and you’re child’s Phys Ed teacher is out until September, so get cracking on a game plan! There’s no time like the present to get active in the fresh air. Think about the bonding and team building to be had! My family and I always create a sporty scavenger hunt to keep things interesting. The family member who collects everything on the list gets to pick dessert. When summer days seem never ending, getting the kids out and tired, is always a plus. Mom life!
