The weather is finally changing, and whether it’s a wild wind or rain play, kids are fascinated by it! Here are some great books about understanding and enjoying nature and its moods

It Looked Like Spilt Milk, by Charles Shaw
Recommended for all ages
This is a unique book with blue and white (white cloud) pictures, with text on opposite pages. Clouds can look like all kinds of things … spilt milk, mittens, squirrels, etc.

If Frogs Made Weather, by Marion Dane Bauer
Recommended for all ages
This cute rhyming story looks at what might happen if animals created weather. The frogs would make it rain, the cats would make it sunny, the flies would make it hot, etc.
It offers a great way to discuss different types of weather and why different animals might like different things.

Rainy Day! by Patricia Lakin
Recommended for all ages
Four alligators start the book by saying, “Not another rainy day!” but they get dressed, go outside, and decide, “Let‘s play!”
Written in rhyme, it‘s a great story about making the most of any weather, and the pictures are bright and engaging for all ages.

Like a Windy Day, by Frank Asch
Recommended for babies and toddlers
A little girl wants to be “like a windy day” and zoom down hillsides, races through streets, scatters seeds, and turns windmills.
Great illustrations and simple text show the reader all the things that wind can do!

Rain Play, by Cynthia Cotten
Recommended for babies and toddlers
Written in rhyming text, this book shows us what happens at the park, when the sky goes dark… do the children scatter or do they stay and play?
It’s a great poem that celebrates the delights of a rainy day.
