5 Easy Ways to Make Olympic Flag with Kids

January 11, 2014momstownRecessNo comments
Making the Olympic flag is a perfect teachable moment for so many early learning skills; colour recognition, patterning, cutting and gluing! Once you and your child recognize the Blue, Yellow, Black, Green and Red pattern, there is no end to how many ways you can create these rings in your house and practice making the pattern! Here are 5 ideas to make the Olympic Flag with your child.

The Winter Olympics are coming soon and kids want to get in on all the excitement!  Not only are there more than 25 teachable moments but there are also several great early learning lessons just from making the Olympic rings with your preschooler!

Here are 5 ideas to make the Olympic Flag with your child.

1.  Make the Olympic Flag using Play-Doh:

  • help your child find the right colours; blue, yellow, black, green and red
  • teach them to roll out the dough (great fine motor skills)
  • practice your shapes together by learning to make a circle
  • patterning practice- put your coloured rings in the right order and show your child how to loop them together

2.  Make the Olympic flag using pipe cleaners:

  • help your child find the right colours; blue, yellow, black, green and red
  • practice your shapes together by learning to make a circle (and other shapes)
  • patterning practice- put your coloured rings in the right order and show your child how to loop them together
  • make it into a mobile for a decoration

3.  Make the Olympic flag using paper plates (and even play ring toss)

4.  Make the Olympic flag using construction paper rings to practice tracing circles, cutting and gluing skills and patterning!  This is a great time to recognize that a letter is also the letter "O"!  "O" is for Olympics!

5.  Make the Olympic Flag with crayons or paint;

  • Trace around a round item from your recycling bin (I used a yogurt container).  Kids will love to practice tracing and patterning.
  • You can also paint the bottom of your round containerwith stamps by finding a can or container in a large circle and painting the bottom.
